How to Stop a Puppy From Biting

4 min read

Puppy biting is normal and usually about play, teething, and over-arousal — not aggression. Stop it by redirecting to appropriate chew outlets, teaching bite inhibition through calm feedback, providing enough rest, and avoiding games that ramp your puppy up. Consistency from everyone in the home is what makes it fade.

Why puppies bite

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, and biting spikes during teething and when they're overtired or over-excited. The most common mistake is assuming a bitey puppy is 'aggressive' — in almost all cases it's normal development that needs channeling, not punishment.

What actually helps

Redirect to a toy or chew the moment teeth touch skin, and reward calm mouths. Keep play from tipping into frantic over-arousal, and build in real rest — an overtired puppy bites more, just like an overtired toddler melts down.

Keep responses calm and consistent across the whole household. If one person wrestles and riles the puppy up while another enforces calm, progress stalls.
